Block Ice Plants

Well tried – The Brine Tank System

For decades block ice has been produced using the traditional brine tank system: Thin-walled ice cans in specially designed racks are filled with pre-cooled water and dipped into a tank where cold brine (salt solution) at -10°C is circulated around the cans. After freezing, a row of cans is hoisted, moved to, and dipped into the thawingt tank to loosen the blocks, then lifted and tipped out on an angled ramp. The blocks slide out and are either stocked in a storage room or distributed directly as a whole block.

This system was and is uncomplicated, reliable and easy to operate.

Until now this system's major disadvantage has been that it always required fixed buildings where the complete system had to be installed locally. This caused a long installation period combined with high costs especially for block ice factories exceeding the production rate of 10 tons per day.

New concept – prefabricated & mobile

KTI-Plersch developed a system where complete Block Ice Plants with daily capacities of up to 50 tons per day are pre-fabricated, easy to transport and ready for operation within a few days. Only high quality products are used.

The complete Block Ice Plant consists of 3 basic components only:

  1. Machinery container
  2. Insulated steel frame with block ice factory
  3. Ice storage container

Machinery container

The complete refrigeration plant for the block ice production is installed inside a standard 40-ft container.
Each plant basically consists of:

  • Refrigeration compressor unit
  • Evaporate condenser
  • Titanium plate-heat exchanger for brine cooling
  • Switch and control board
  • Pump to circulate the brine between brine tank and titanium plate-heat exchanger
  • Complete piping and wiring of the system with all necessary control devices
  • Air-conditioning unit to keep the inside temperature 10 degrees below ambient
  • Sufficient inside lighting
  • Easy connections for inlet and outlet of brine

Insulated steel frame with block ice factory

The complete ice production is installed inside a rigid steel frame with inside insulation.

The walls, the floor and ceiling are insulated with 40 mm PUR (polyurethane) foam panels, both sides covered with coated galvanized sheet-metal.

Inside this steel frame the following components are installed:

  • Heavy-duty overhead crane with 2 speeds for moving, lifting and tipping the ice cans
  • Well insulated brine tank with high resistant epoxide coating
  • Wooden cover of the brine tank in sections
  • Frames with ice cans - all hot dipped galvanized
  • Water pre-cooling tank
  • Ice can filling device
  • Thawing tank
  • Ice block dump table
  • Access door
  • Hatch for ice discharge
  • Sufficient inside lighting
  • Easy connections for inlet and outlet of brine


Once the machinery container and steel frame are placed the brine circulation system is completed using heavy-duty hoses.

Ice storage container – approximately 20 tons

Next to the steel frame with the block ice factory another 40-ft container will be installed insulated completely with 60 mm PUR (polyurethane) foam panels, both sides covered with coated galvanized sheet-metal.

The container is equipped with:

  • Air-cooler for keeping the inside temperature below 0°C
  • Access through doors at front and back
  • Hatch for ice inlet
  • Hatch for ice discharge
  • Sufficient inside lighting
